  Wal-Mart flexes political muscle

Chicago Alderman Emma Mitts speaks during the grand opening of Chicago's first Wal-Mart on the city's West Side Wednesday morning Sept. 27 2006. The opening followed a four-year journey that pitted unions and small business owners against politicians and activists eager to bring jobs to the city. It came two weeks after aldermen failed to override Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's veto of the city's so-called Wal-Mart has been steadily boosting its contributions to state and local politicians just as such politicians have been taking on bigger roles in deciding key issues concerning the company's operations.
